Dug up my main crop today Lady Balfour. First time I've grown them and yes it is true they give huge yields and some massive potatoes all good so far. The slugs love em, I even had the little bu**ers hanging out the side of some spuds. I'd say 70% have holes in them 75 if you add the ones I stuck the fork through. Anyway I've just roasted some and they are very good, not quite as good as Kestrel but that's not a fair comparison as Kestrel to me make the best roast pot's, but still lovely and crispy.

Lifted the last of mine today as we've had a Full Smith, and I don't want to push my luck...

King Eds and Maris Piper both great - some wireworm damage (not surprising, it was grassland last year but I thought it would be worse), but the Pink Fir Apples have done brilliantly.  I just kept finding more and more and more .... and hardly any wireworm.

Dried them all off and have got hessian sackfuls in the garage - will keep us going for a while.

The wirewormed KEs and Maris Ps are going to be kept for immediate-ish use, and also to be made into mash for freezing.  Handy for cottage/shepherds pie in the winter!

Had some PFA for dinner tonight (kids call them Alien Potatoes), and they were absolutely delicious.

I also grew  Maris Bard, Pentland Javelin, Marforna, Maris Peer and Saxon.  All did well, bits of wireworm but nothing major.  Would grow them all again, especially Maris Peer.

Got around to digging up my remaining Kestrel today.

Here's the prize winner at just over 2lb:

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

They weren't  planted until mid-May.

Makes you wonder why we panic in the spring!

I've also started digging up the lates, starting with "Ambo".

Per plant the yield is even better than the Kestrel, whilst none have reached the size of this individual, there are a good 5 or 6 one pounders plus on each plant, along with a few smaller ones.

They were planted after the Kestrels!

i am gonna have to spend a while reading on here as I have had very little from my potatoes and am thinkin i might be better off buying from farm shops. Less than half a pound from each plant and some of them had been eaten.

Oh well there is always next year

Going to have to rethink my aproach to potatoe growing next year.  :)

I was late putting them in due to illness in the earlier part of the year.

I was in that much of a rush to get them in that I didn't even bother with manure!

The Sarpo Mira and still standing tall & proud and are in full bloom.

First of two bags of Maris Piper harvested today. Disappointing crop size. Good clean, good sized potatoes but about two thirds volume of any other crop we have had this year. :( We'll see how they taste......
