My Setanta maincrops have been devastated by blight this week and they are supposed to be the most resistant to blight on the market !

Maincrop Majestic harvested today. Not the most sizeable potatoes or crop, but good and clean. We'll see how they cook and taste though. Roasties today. :)

2nd early Catriona harvested today. Another decent sized, clean looking crop. The odd purple tinge on some of the pots, so they look rather nice. One thing we did notice is that this variety has many more very small potatoes in the crop, than the other varieties we have grown this year. I wondered if this is caused by the container growing and the plants running out of room to grow all the fruits up to a decent size? Perhaps someone knowledgeable could give their opinion?

Cooking and taste thoughts are that it seems quite ordinary, almost lacking in flavour, and therefore not extraordinary enough to be given space again in our setup. Will try them roasted though, they might be good at that.

:)

Just browsing through a seed potato website and their Kestrel looked like what was sold to us (by someone else not this website in question) as Catriona. Not sure now, I wouldn't know anyway having never grown either of these varieties before. :)

Hm, I see what you mean. On the website I referred to though, the Catriona didn't seem to have any colouration.

Definite good news though, the Majestic were lovely as roasties! :)

Lifted some more Wilja's today.
An excellent crop with a very slight hint of scab and no slug holes  :).
First class looking spud with the heaviest tuber weighing 409g and the rest not far behind.
99% Organic and 1% Slug Pellets.

Allotment holder since 27th May 2007.

Cut the halums down on my Maris Piper yesterday due to suspected blight.  Dug one plant up as I needed some for the weekend - I got just under 4kg from the one plant, a few really big ones and a few smaller (but still a good size). I hope the rest of the plants areas good!   There was some scab (some worse than others) and two or three had holes that I suspect is slug damage - but on investigation they don't seem to have gone too far in.  We had two baked for lunch today and they were lovely!  I will be leaving the rest underground for a couple of weeks to be on the safe side.

Lifted some more cracking Kestrel. One weighed in at 1lb 4 oz. Realy chuffed as I was very late planting them, (Mid-May).

That's my tea sorted.

so far i have dug

pentland javalin, taste good, very poor yeild
lady balfor, only dug one plant but the yield and flavor were good, although a bit scabby
highland burgundy, yield appalling, flavor ok

not impressed at all this year, they all got caught by a late frost and then there was no rain for a month

so impressed this year from my first year last year (tongue twister), Unlike someone who saib earlier about thier 1st early Pentland Javelin., i was pleased with them for the first year of asking , we don't want a huge yield but do ask for taste and they gave us that . 2nd early ,wow , take na breath , Maris Peer , can you beat the taste, texture it keeps its skin on when boiled and i would only boil it to get it's full potential so sweet and def one for next 2nd early. Maincrop is Desiree and i'm digging those up on thursday so can't comment yet on those but i grew them last year and stored them and was not disapointed so fingers crossedxxxxxxxxx :)

Picollo gave me a fantastic crop of huge potatoes, would definetley recomend as i only used them as a back up because they are blight resistant :)

Lifted three short rows of Juliette Monday. Not bad yield good but size wise not suit for jackets,  tried roasted were passable but as mash very good  and as boil spud did bot break up at all flavour good. Lifted a few test Blue Danube to see if any worth showing on Sunday but so far the skins are all marked. I had a few from the home garden and they do not boil, steaming takes for ever, microwave ok, roasted passbale but flavour wise they make really good chips.
