Only grow Piccasso and Ramono as a main crop so here is my results...

Piccasso: Far too many, used all my sacks. Sacks full of rugby ball size jacket spuds.
Ramano: Looks like a very good crop this year but can't lift until I find some sacks  ::)

Before i forget, Had a problem with a fox and rats attacking the spuds belive i have found out the reason why, I fed the spuds with Chicken Manure Pellets, fox was digging around the spuds because of the smell and the rats nibbled at the exposed spuds.

I was late with spuds this year - I've never grown them before so opted for an organic potato growing kit, which had amongst others - Orla seed potatoes.  Whilst I'm very pleased with the taste of the potatoes, the yield was very low - only about 15 potatoes from 4/5 tubers.  However, I've just emptied the growing sack onto my garden border and discovered another spud hiding in the bag!

I won't buy a kit again. but I'm pleased with the variety - has anyone come across Orla seed potatoes on their own?

I'm fairly sure I saw Orla on sale at B&Q this year.

I inherited some Picasso from another allotment holder.  They went in fairly late, given my late start, but have done extremely well.  I'm getting around 15 spuds per plant, a mix of sizes from medium to large.  Really tasty.

ON THE LOTTY: Planted mid to late May:
First Earlies - Lord Rosebery: (had a wee rummage and smuggled a couple- yield looks ok, but a lot of marbles so leaving them to grow longer) Tasted great- no sign of wireworm
Second Early -  Ulster Sovereign and Maris Peer..... plants are still thriving so leaving to get bigger
Maincrop - Kerr Pink (I am dying in anticipation- taste of home)

Dug up my Maris Peer's this week... got LOADS!!!! and they were SO yummy! Great flavour, good size.
They're dug up late because of being sown so late, but whilst everyone else has eaten all their new potatoes, I'm now getting envious looks with my haul!!!!

The first earlies are still growing.... the plants look healthy and strong, so i dug the second earlies first as they were keeling over and dying off.... week after next, will take on the Lord Roseberrys!!! Bring it on!!!! :-)

Just realised my spuds were on the Beechgrove garden when I was on holiday.
Fast forward to 26min and 30secs http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00tlcv3
They were all grown in the polypot system and the NVS Sherine produced over 5kgs from one potato. The potato was a minituber aswell. The Pentland Lustre produced over 3kg and the Swift was very poor at 1.7kg.
I thought I had better add that as the video runs out in 4 days.

You might be surprised at how many saw that. We in the geographical region keep reminding everyone else about Beechgrove.

On this topic I have been talking highly about the superb crop I have had from Kestrels.
They have been large lovely looking spuds with hardly any blemishes or slug damage.

Unfortunately so far they have not been great for either boiling or mash  :(
Which are the two things we most use spuds for. Its not just us that think that because we have gave them to friends and asked for their verdict and they came back with the exact same verdict as us.

However our Wilja , have been nearly as big as the Kestrels in size and have been great for Mash.

So looks like next year we will drop the Kestrels and increase the Wilja's and also add some Vivaldi (any opinions welcome) and also a  row of Mafonas for jackets only.
99% Organic and 1% Slug Pellets.

Allotment holder since 27th May 2007.

I grew Vivaldi last year and thought they were lovely as new and jackets, and they mashed ok as well :)

one thing though when I mashed some and used that to top a shep's pie and froze it
.......they had a really weird gritty texture when eventually eaten.
Just something to be aware of.
