Empty Beds
« on: July 24, 2010, 16:33 »
Hello

I've now pulled up my onions and peas so I have some empty spaces, dont really think there is anything I can put in them so whats the best way to keep them until I do my autumn digging I dont really want to waste my time keep weeding them.

Thanks
Missy

Put muck on them!
Cover them with black plastic!
Cover them with cardboard! Or even,
Sow them with a green manure!
It all depends what you put into the ground, to what you get out

Why don't you use them to grow additional veg?
There's so much that you can still sow or plant that will give you good results before the winter sets in.

Looking HERE -on this board it suggests that you could still sow:-
    *  Spring Cabbage
    * Chicory
    * Chinese cabbage
    * Kohlrabi
    * Lettuce
    * Peas
    * French Beans
    * Beetroot
    * Carrots
    * Radishes

There's other things too contained in recent threads asking "what can I plant now".

I'd certainly not consider manuring and/or covering with black plastic this early in the year.
The successes and failures of each year keep me motivated for the following year.

So long as you add fertiliser (growmore, chicken pellets, calcified seaweed - whatever is your favourite general one) you can get a couple of cash crops in.

Extra dwarf beans and salad items are good. They're expensive.

Certainly plenty of time to keep sowing/growing and still seeds about if you have run out, too  :D
