septrin antibiotic and egg withdrawal
« on: May 20, 2010, 08:53 »
Me again,

My three chickens arrived 2 weeks ago and have just realised that the funny noise one has been making since arrival is sneezing. She has also started to cough and has a runny nose and intermitently an orange poo Although she appears quite perky her crop is never full and she has not gained weight. They were vaccinated, wormed and deloused before they arrived and the other two have none of these symptoms.
Saw the vet who has prescribed Septrin twice daily for 5 days. She thinks it could just be a respiratory infection but also mentioned coccidoisis (?sp) and aspergillosis (which really worried me)
Anyway how long is egg withdrawal ? Any other thoughts from forum members?
I am sorry to keep bothering you but am so inexperienced at this. Jane

I have never used this antibiotic so can't help you with the egg withdrawal sorry, perhaps a phonecall to your vets would be the way to go (they should know how long or at least they could find out for you).
Aspergillosis is not usually transmitted from bird to bird. Make sure your coup and run is thoroughly cleaned out and spray with a disinfectant such as Vanodine V18 which will help kill any fungal spores. Do not use straw as this can harbour fungal spores, keep the coup as dust free as possible. Your vet can also prescribe nystatin to either use in their feed or orally by syringe.
Staffies are softer than you think.

anti fungal - it's used for thrush and athletes foot  I had it prescribed for my chicks that had vent gleet. If you get it from the vets (cost me about the same as a prescription) they will work out the correct dosage for a chicken.

thanks joyfull. I use Stalosan F in the run - is this as effective as Vanodine? I use Hemcore in the coop and droppings board.
Will phone vet and post her reply.
