Which antibiotic?
« on: November 19, 2013, 21:32 »
My limping chicken has now developed some heat in her poorly leg so I have an appointment with a vet at 9am tomorrow.  He says he is willing to look at her  but is not a chicken expert.  Can anyone advise which antibiotic I should ask for, I have never used the for my chickens before.  Is Baytril the one or is this more for respiratory issues? Would appreciate some help if anyone can! Thanks

I'm no chicken expert so those more knowledgeable can shoot me down, but when researching, I read about bumblefoot which can be an inflamed joint in the foot.  Can occur as a result of poor diet (low in calcium), or injury such as landing awkwardly if they are jumping off high perches, and heavier breeds are more prone to it.  When it comes to antibiotics, I think that would have to be the vets judgement - and maybe also consider egg withdrawal during the treatment.  Hope your chicken gets better

I had problems with my birds, one (not sure of sex) it had an injection, the rest wwere on baytril for a week, they all sounded like they wewre on 40 a day, but it cleared them up, the bird that had the injection was kept indoors for 2 days, it is great now (but shows no gratitude)

If you do use baytril, you cant use the eggs (I know its hard binning good eggs)

But it worked for my birds, no rasping noises
It's all about the journey, not the destination

if it turns out to be bumblefoot then ask your vet to find the correct dosage of penicillin - (they may need to consult the books or gooogle for that).
Staffies are softer than you think.
