Last stupid question. I promise
« on: May 18, 2010, 20:17 »
in a previous post about over feeding you all told me it was fine to leave the pellets out all day cause the hens won't over eat. if I put some warm water on their pellets they eat loads of them and I mean loads !!!! Is this a good way of getting them to eat enough before bed or could that binge last thing at night be bad for them?? I thought cause it's a long time Till morning before they get any pellets it would be good but I'd like to check and see what you guys think

They'll be asleep ;)  They don't need food during the night - just like us  :)

they will sit and digest the food all night and leave lots of poo under the perch for you in the morning, coming out with empty crops, ready to start the day again.

they should go to roost with full crops, as they generally poop, about half of their daily when they are roosting at night, which is why it is a good idea to get them to perch, and not sleep on the floor or in the nest boxes.

dont worry about how much they eat, as long as it is mash or pellets, maybe a bit of mixed corn, especially in the winter as it helps to keep them warm as they digest it.

I'd be more concerned that they over eat than under.  Fat birds are not healthy birds and the same goes for chickens too.

I only give mine warm mash in the winter because i like to give them a hot breakfast.
They do like to have a full crop to go to bed on as they dont eat during the night i just give mine some corn.
No question is stupid please dont be afraid to ask anything. I did.
