toms and greenhouse, too early?
« on: May 06, 2010, 12:55 »
I've had my toms and chillis in the kitchen for about 2 months now and I need to pot them on, I always forget when I should put them into the greenhouse.

Is now ok??

Cheers
Mark

looking in my notes I planted toms in greenhouse 15th may last year and they did very well. I am planning on putting mine in this weekend, though I'll keep some fleece and bubble wrap handy in case frosts return...

Mine have been in the g/h for a fortnight but still in pots.
Have salads and carrots in the g/h beds so toms will go in once they are cropped.

There isn't a specific time when they should go out and they should really be hardened off first. Mine have been in the greenhouse for two weeks in their final position but they were put out during the day and brought in at night to get them used to conditions outside.

Goodness me - mine have been in the unheated greenhouse for 3 weeks, with my cucumbers.  I didn't even harden them off - This is my first time using a greenhouse.  As far as I can tell the tomatos are fine and growing ok.  They are all still in small pots.  The cucumbers have not grown very much, but the tomatos seem to be ok.  No flowers though.  Oh well fingers crossed.  It has been quite cold here but I live on the South Coast so perhaps it is not such a problem

As far as I can tell the tomatos are fine and growing ok.  They are all still in small pots.  The cucumbers have not grown very much, but the tomatos seem to be ok.

Just in case helpful, for comparative reference:

Tomatoes:

14-Feb Sown
20-Feb Germinated
06-Mar Potted up to 3"
17-Apr Potted on to 4.5" (a week later than last year)
02-May Potted on to 6.5"
08-May about 90cm / 36" tall, first flowers just opened

would normally pot on again to 9" / 10", but as they are later this year they may go straight out from 6.5" pots

plant in the greenhouse border around 3rd week of May (could do sooner, but this maximises the time in my conservatory which is a bit warmer)

Cucumbers

06-Mar Sown
12-Mar Germinated
17-Mar Potted up to 3"
25-Apr Potted on to 5" (2 weeks later than last year)
08-May about 60cm / 24" tall, first flowers just opened (10 days later than last year)
08-May Ready for potting on to 6" - 7" pots

plant out in greenhouse border 3rd week of May (as per Toms above)

Last year first fruit was 16-May. However, I since read that you should remove the first few fruit as if you don;t the plant thinks it is "done" and stops producing. Mine didn't produce any more until 27-Jun :( so I'll do that this year (and I also have Mini-munch this year which are covered in tiny female flowers/Cues  fruit :)
