Early start toms
« on: January 27, 2009, 10:04 »
i was bored so I thought I might Experiment,  I have sown some tomato Habering seeds in a tray, and put them on the windowsil, hey presto they took just 5 days to show through and are now 2" inch long, with healthy look about em. should I remove the plastic bag from over them now and transfer em on, ? should I leave em ?  Is it likely they will turn out poor because of light probs,  I can keep em warm enough and I have room in the conservatory to put em.  Yours sincerly Mr notsure. ???

Get that bag off them else they'll go leggy and drawn, pot on when you have 2 proper leaves not the 1st leaves, don't handle the stem when you do so

Give them as much light as possible, even put a piece of cardboard covered with ali foil behind them. (Whose tip have I just nicked? ;) )
If they are a bit leggy but not too bad to transplant, repot them deeper, the stems will grow more roots at the drop of a hat.
If all goes well, here's another tip of someone else's, :D limit the plant to just three trusses, for faster ripening.
I demand the right to buy seed of varieties that are not "distinct, uniform and stable".

i started these off in a heated propergator on the 10/01/2009, but i took them out as soon as i could see them trying to break through the soil and it seems to have done the trick

Last year I sowed my toms on 8th April and I made a note in my diary to do them later this year. They just got too leggy too fast indoors  :( How I long for a greenhouse

My toms got very leggy last year, it was my first year growing and I didn't know what I was doing, they spent too long on the windowsill before I potted them on. Still, they did OK and caught up well - by the end of the season the stem of the one which was outdoors was almost as thick as my wrist! The ones inside the mini greenhouse were not quite as chunky but were still sturdy and I got a good crop from them.

Organic...so far!
