Sweetcorn planted out today.
« on: May 05, 2010, 11:35 »
I planted out my sweetcorn today, they where just to big for the windowsill anymore & are niceley hardened now.

I had 30 plants so they are in a grid 6 plants x 5 plants, with 18 inches betwwen plants. That is a bit of a big bed but I am hoping the extra room between the outside plants can be used for my dwarf beans a bit later in the month.

Am I the first to plant out?

I generaly just stick things in the ground green side up.

I planted mine out just over a week ago,
Like you Tom they were getting too big so I  had to plant them out and build a 2ft bamboo frame around them and cover them in fleece.
Popping my head into thier cocoon today they seem ok in the main, a few have a bit of browning on the leaves though.
I know I planted my seeds too early this year  ::) and have made a note for 2011,  I have sown another packet in case they fail

my immediate neighbour has planted her sweetcorn in their plot last week under fleece. I was shocked but they seem to do ok without any trouble.
I am itching to plant them out but will wait till 13th may! thats the day when the southwesterlies are returning (according to number of weather sites)

I moved mine into the coldframe today and they will stay there with the lid on for 2 weeks with other flower plants, then will harden them off and plant out mid-May.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Just got the manure to dig into the bed, they're about 6 inches high in loo rolls at the mo, so will go in at the weekend. SOmeone opposite me planted their beans in the warm weather then went away and they've been frosted, May's a bit tricky like that, even down here in the "soft" south!

Yes and they don't just have to get frosted to finish up dead (that's just the quick way!)

A sustained period of low daytime and/or night-time temperatures can put them into such a prolonged sulk they sometimes forget how to come out of it!  :(   :(
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Wow you lot are early.  I always find sweetcorn in the french beans and cucumber catagory i.e. very soft and as JayG says - sulky in the extreme in cool weather.

Mine are only just germinating on the windowsill, but my allotment is prone to the odd late frost so wasn't planning to put them out until back end of May.  I'll pot on and transfer to the greenhouse first to harden off.

I transferred mine from window ledge to greenhouse, but under a polytent at night, and it's looking lovely and green but it has slowed it up, so I think it will be ok in there for another couple of weeks. Fingers crossed  ::)

Am I the first to plant out?

Nope ... planted mine on 20th April ... but that was in the greenhouse [:D]

The ones I planted outside last year, at this time, were stunted and although they produced a crop they had nothing like the vigour of the ones I started off a bit later.
