It's always a good time to ask a question.
A brassica collar is a flat square of something like carpet underfelt, with a hole in it. It is put around the bottom of the stem of the brassica plant, resting on the soil, in the hope that it confuses the cabbage root fly larva when they hatch out so that they do not eat the roots of your precious cabbages.

it's more to prevent the fly laying her eggs at the base of the stem.if she succeeds and the larvae hatch below the collar has been of no use at all.
3" squares of roofing felt work much better as when the soil warms up the tar gives of a strong odour which deters the fly.
simply use a pair of scissors to replicate the cuts in the shop sold collars.
i always used SYBOL powder before it's withdrawl, but any ant killer containing PYMETHRINS works exactly the same.you see tubs of it in them pound shops.
all depends how organic you want to be i suppose.

thing with collars the wind gets under them and causes damage to the stem as they flap about, ant killer works a treat.

I've never had that problem with those collars - and never had root fly either  :)
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
