First soft shell egg
« on: January 12, 2010, 08:47 »
We have had our first soft shell egg this morning but not sure who has laid it.

I can only assume that even though they are having plenty of warmed layers pellets with some oats and poultry spice added, have a bowl of grit with oyster shell always available and have water which is changed a few times a day at present because of the Big freeze with ACV, that it must be the lack of free ranging they have at the moment because everything is just covered in a foot of snow.

I will keep an eye on them but is there anything I should be doing??

Hi Ma, if it's just the one then I wouldn't worry too much, however if it continues then try cutting out all treats and if necessary give the culprit a little bit of limestone powder (some on here give their soft shell layers it on a grape half). As yours always have access to oyster shell (or even crushed cooked egg shells) you are doing it right  :D
Staffies are softer than you think.

my little monkeys occasionally have a soft shelled egg when they havent eaten their pellets and preferred to have a junk food day, so i do try and give them treats in the afternoon, so at least theyve had a chance to eat their proper food first, theyre like kids will fill up on treats rather than "boring old pellets"  ha ha

Hi Joyfull and doodoo, thank you for your replies. I haven't been giving them many treats instead been warming their pellets into a mash and adding a few porridge oats. I wanted to make sure they were eating enough of the layers pellets wether warmed or not.
Hopefully this is just a blip but we will keep an eye on them.
Thanks again  :D

Was hoping the first soft shell egg was a blip but we have had another this morning.
We think we know which  one is laying it. Checked all the girls and they all seem fine.

Have seen mentioned  limestone powder/flour? where would I get this from please and is this all I should try at this time?

Update on soft shell eggs.

We had day 1 + 2 softshells and day 3 + 4(today) thin hard shells. Yesterday we gave her some limestone powder  and wonder how often and for how long we need to give this.

Oh and don't laugh but we ended up having to buy a 4kg tub of the stuff which will last for our lifetime I think.

Does anyone know what it can be used for??

If anyone wants any just let me know.
