very long sprouts on seeds pots
« on: May 10, 2007, 10:35 »
I have just been bought some seed pots from Poundland, they have incredibly long shoots on them, like 20 inches, little else on the shoots, a little green leaf at the end, but tiny. I want to try to get them in, should I break the soots off, or some of them? or just try to plany them as they are??

Any tips gratefully received!

Thanks
Lucy

Personally I'd try to plant as is, but if they break off they should shoot again.
Many years ago I read that long shoots gave a slightly higher yeild than normal chits, but it was not significantly more to be worth the trouble.

Sounds as tho' you've got that plot partially under control now, hows it going ?

Hi Rich,
We have sprayed and cleared alot of the junk, we are waiting untill we mark out the beds to clear all the rest of the glass out. I have plenty of seeds sown in pots to transplant in a couple of weeks, but took a chance on these    but now wonder what to do with them.. I think I will grow them in a dustbin so they don't have to be moved again.

Will get the plot rotovated in 2 weeks then get planting out!!

Thanks for asking, hope to see your patch sometime! somthing to aspire to!

the reason we like shorter sprouts on chitted spuds is because there is less likelyhood for them to break off.

obviously the spuds you have bought have been kept in the dark for too long - but they might still be ok.

i would recommend drawing your trench out - when you put in your pots be carful not to break shoots - so try sitting spuds on some new, soft compost and cover them well with soft compost - mounding it well above the seed.- so when you fill in your trench, you have already made a good rigde for them and you also know where they are

when they begin to shoot, earth up as normal.

good luck.
