What pots do you use for your seeds?
« on: November 23, 2010, 11:45 »
I am planning ahead for the spring when I will start to plant my seeds. Having never done this before I am looking for advise on what you use for your seeds to grow in whilst in the greenhouse,

Plastic pots

Peat pots

Hand made newspaper pots

Seed trays or modules.

Maybe a poll would be better to see what the majority use.

Hi Ma Lowe,

We use a variety and a mixture of all those kinds of pots depending on which seeds are being planted. You're welcome to create a poll if you want, remember it would be a good idea to create an "other" option in case all are not covered by the choices you provide.

Think it might be an idea to edit it again to allow at least 2 votes each!  :)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

I would use all of the above except for the peat pots. It really depends on what I am growing - big seeds like cukes/beans/sweetcorn would go into individual pots. Smaller seeds would normally be started in either seed trays or modules. I think that you will find that most people would do the same.

I use most of the above, but plastic pots are the most common for me.

used them all except peat pots.
the best are paper pots for sweetcorns and beans
and a new pot I used this year was to get loads of polystyrene cups (sort of one you get in indian takeaway sauce pots) made a whole underneath and put in tom seeds. They were brilliant and didnt need 3 inch potting at all.  :)

Another one that uses them all, except for peat pots. I had trouble using those as I couldn't keep the pots damp enough for the roots to grow through (peat is very hard to rewet once dry) and lost the crop :(
Paper pots don't seem to suffer in the same way, though  :)

I usually use seed trays or modules, even for starting off onion sets, however I use plastic pots for more expensive seeds or those that will have big seed leaves e.g. F1 cucumbers, courgettes, squash.

Although I grow all sorts of things it's on a much smaller scale than a lot of you allotment owners, so I tend to use plastic pots in the same way that Mikem does, and paper pots rather than peat pots or cardboard tubes for the same reason Mum suggests.

Although I quite enjoy making paper pots I would probably have a re-think if I wanted, say, 100 sweetcorn plants rather than about 30!   :)

I primarily use the large clear rectangular salad containers with attached lids. They act like mini greenhouses and with a few holes drilled into the bottom, presto!

I also have very large plastic lidded containers from protein powder which I saw crosswise in half, drill a few bottom holes and they make good deep seeding containers.

One thing I never use is the little peat pots or jiffy pots as they dry out far too fast or go moldy from watering  >:(

I'll use anything that will hold  compost, allow it to drain and hasn't cost any money to buy. :)

I tend to use modules and newspaper pots most of the time but also reuse plastic pots from the garden center (sometimes they have a box of free pots by the door).
