hi everyone, i saw the vet this morning and the vet was really pleased with willow as the splint was still in a good position and she was perky and bright. the vet phone this afternoon to talk to us as ahe had been in touch with a avian vet to ask advice about hoe long to leave her in the splint because of contractures. the avian vet expressed her concerns about where the break was.(its the top of the wing thats joined onto the body) she said this kind of break dosent heal well and usually has to be pinned! after a long conversation with the vet , we have decided to leave her in the splint till monday. if it looks to be healing, then she will be re-splinted, if not she will be transferred to the avian vet (hollywell i think) they will then decide if they are going to pin it or amputate it!. normally they would pin it they said , but because her bones are so thin they are worried that the slightest knock will damage it again , so they are thinking more along the chopping it off line... they said that she will be a bit unsteady for a few weeks, but will soon adapt. i asked about the pain, they said they would be able to manage it and it would only be a few weeks at the most. i have to say, she dosent seem to be in pain today. she is sat in the cat basket (with the top off) in the run with all the other girls. she has been eating all day, and drinking, she is talking to us and she is very alert. so we are now back to square 1. we will know more on monday. does anyone else have a chicken with 1 wing? how do they cope?. if she was older we would re-think what we are doing, but she is only 1, she has many happy years in front of her, she is worth fighting for . xx

How is willow this morning Lizzie? I think (but have never had this happen myself) she would be ok with just one wing after she has learnt to adjust her balance - probably like cats and dogs cope  :) . joyfullxx

hi, she is bright and breezy this morning :D she keeps standing up and trying to put her leg down, but her splint is still in place....so fingers crossed her wing will heal.....i thought id have to deal with mites, lice, impacted crops, worms....snuffles even ....but not this...not within the first week
the vet is very confident she will be fine with one wing. she said she may be unbalanced but will learn...the only other thing is she wont be able to get away from preditors the same as the others and get away from sqwabbles...so we would have to watch her. fingers crossed it wont come to that anyway :)
she DID NOT like her bottom washed tho....she was most put out. couldnt leave her tho, she cant reach to clean her self, and worried about fly strike as she is sitting all the time. ive sprayed the cat box with citronalla (sp?), but i can still see the odd blue bottle buzzing about >:(....just keepin an eye out, but like i say, very bright and vocal this morning :D

Hi Lizzie, just catching up as have had to spend some time away from the forum doing other non chicken stuff. Tut.

You poor, poor love.  My heart goes out to you.

Amputation sounds scary until you think about the actual size of a chicken wing (not incl feathers).  To be honest, it's hardly worth having in the first place?  I really don't think it would be missed in the longer term. But as you say, feathers crossed, the break will heal well, and it won't come to that.  Set the thought aside as Plan B.

My dogs have had metacam in the past, for arthritis .  Its v good in terms of pain relief. Also an antiflamatory, I think.  As for bottom washing, well who amongst us likes that?!

Re flies, would recommend Red Top Fly Trap.  You have to hang it about 5 mtrs away from the area you want to draw flies away from, and work best in sunlight.  They are truely awful things to look at, especially when they do the business and fill up with flies, and they don't smell good either (but that's what attracts the flying crits).  So if you are worried about Willow being vulnerable, then I'd suggest you get one. Look on ebay, a bit cheaper than elsewhere.  They reall do work.

Everything crossed for Willow, and look after yourself.
xx

How is little Willow today? I bet after this she will be quite a favourite, and be very friendly and tame, visiting you in the kitchen for her strawberries and fresh yoghurt!

hi everyone, just got back from the vet with willow, the vet has looked at her wing, and they are really pleased with her progress. although there is loads of swelling and bruising the wing seems stable :D :D :D :D. im so pleased i was nearly gonna hug the vet. anyway, she has a splint on till friday and they are gonna look at her again....every thing crossed she is gonna be fine. she is really perky and bright, and standing up alot trying to put her bad leg down....its got the most spectacular bruise on it, its bright green, the ver said her wing is similar shades :D. interestingly the vet thinks her wing may have been broken when she came to us as she said sometimes the birds flap when they are being taken out the cages. willow has always created when being picked up, we put it down to her not being socialised, but the vet thinks thats maybe why she fell, because she couldnt use her wing to stabilise her self..anyway we will never know, all i care about is that she is on the mend, and she appears to be just that!. thanks for al your messages, and support, lizzie and willow x
