try to keep all feed shut up at night, either hang it up out of reach, or cover it, lock it in the shed/garage. spare feed, try keeping it in metal dustbins. I always hang up my feed on a chan, lower it during the day so the chookies can reach, then raise it high at bedtime. Works for me

At night (once the chickens feed has been removed) you could try a very small pot of feed outside the chicken pen / run where the chickens cannot reach it - surround this with traps once the mouse / mice have got the idea of where to go for a free meal.

Just a thought.  ;)

i have mine hanging down from a chain on a hook in the rafters holding the rain cover roof, it hangs about 6" from the floor (neck height for chooks) through the day, then loop it up at bedtime to about 4'-5' if that helps.  I would guess about 2-3' would do, but remeber rats and mice are agile climbers  >:(

I recommend buying a trap or two anyway..... stop the problem before it takes hold. I recommend the black box ones, with the block of poison fixed inside. Mice and rats can run through the little maze inside, so chooks/dogs/cats etc cant get to it. The block is fixed so there is no risk of a rodent carrying the poison to within reach. The poison smells sweet to the rodents, who will quickly find it, nibble on it, then after a day or two they stay in their home cos they feel ill, then FALL ASLEEP forever   Mwahahaha

Just make sure though that your girls don't find the poisoned mice as they will eat them   :(.
I have found in the past week 2 dead rats in my garden that had been poisoned so they don't always get back to their nest to go to the big sleep.

get a bait box { the solid block ones that the girls cant get into } place it within the run but make sure its well hiden mines under one of the sheds with only a couple of tiny gaps where the rats an mice can get in , you'll never get them again . i put mine in there ages ago and since i havent seen rats or mice in there an i have left food out that hasnt been touched at all .

This is why i use the old fashioned breakback traps. It`s impossible to control where and when the victims of the poison will die. It might not be pleasant emptying  traps but its safer for the chickens and wildlife in general. Even if the hens don`t eat the poisoned mouse a hedgehog might.
