Bl***y snails
« on: May 08, 2009, 17:30 »
Does anyone have any good tips on getting rid of snails, they are eating all my lettuces, beans etc.  Have put beer traps and nemaslug down to get rid of slugs but not really sure what to do about the snails, I have squashed all the ones I've found but they are brazen, just all sitting there in the cold frame this morning.  This is war!

Save them in a sealed container, feed them on one of your lettuces for a couple of weeks then cook with garlic butter and eat, once word gets around they'll not be so brazen about being found red-footed (snails don't have hands) in your cold frame.

I’ve suggested it before but my preferred method is to use a grapefruit half to lull them in then two house bricks to give them a headache. I guess check under anything they like to hide under and you can also use barriers such as copper, eggshell, sand/ grit or coffee grinds.

Don’t expect it will be long before slug pellets are suggested too – not my choice, but they are the most effective option.

I've always used salt - they won't go near it cos it melts them. Either sprinkle some salt round the edged of your cold frame, or dilute some in a mister and spray around and up the sides of the frame, taking care to to get it on the plants. I have had problems sometimes in wet weather where they come in under the kitchen door, and doing this has always worked for me :)

During the growing season, I go out EVERY night with a torch and collect the slugs and snails... Nowadays I feed them to my chickens...  I used to catch at least 150 per night, gradually over the past 5 years it has reduced considerably and now I only get around 10 - 15 per night....  I have tried EVERYTHING....  This is the only thing I have found that works.   I have now got that the occasional nibbled lettuce is just not a problem any more.

Try and find where the snails go in the daytime and tidy it up. That is usually within a few yards. Behing pots, in rubbish heaps, in old walls, in ivy, hedges. If you go out at night you may be able to spot them on their journey to your plants.

If you have ever watched a snail in agony you will not use salt.

Yes not very pleasant - which is why they stay away

Another vote for torch at night time. We caught over 50 the first night but now we get a handful on a dry night and a few more when it's wet. They definitely have favourite spots they like to hang out.

The only thing that works for me is the torch every night & plastic bag! :tongue2: I just cant squash the snails, so I lob them across the road, nice grassy verge!
