Recycling Bags
« on: May 17, 2009, 21:02 »
As I am getting rather short of room for growing stuff now, have brought a set of 3 recycling bags from  Aldi (99p for all 3 - bargain!!) and was planning on filling with compost and growing my root veggies in them - is this a good idea

Originally brought them for spuds, but they are quite a light colour and let alot of light through so did not think they would be so good for spuds  :(  Now thinking about carrots.
I have a pair of secateurs and I'm not afraid to use them!!

Would the light get through the compost?

Would the light get through the compost?

I don't think so barney, but I was thinking about those potatoes that might creep to the edge of the bag and be exposed, but I suppose the majority of them would be okay.

You have got me thinking now!!    Might just experiment with one bag as I have a couple of potatoes that really need to go in the ground now, and see what happens as was just gonna throw them away anyway  :)

Good luck!
Just been having a conversation on buckets for potatoes on another posting (just harvested....) and yes some of mine have sprouted round the edge of the buckets I'm using, but hopefully they'll be OK. any crop will be welcome as this is my learner first year on spuds

Just put your bag inside a couple of cheap black bin bags to help keep the light off the sides.

That is exactly what my dad has done for the first time this year. He has grown his spuds in a recycle bag. So far they seem to be growing very well, but not sure what the crop will be like?
I may take my time.....but i'll get there in the end.
