Carrots in Containers
« on: April 21, 2009, 13:55 »
I'd like to grow some carrots in containers.

I would appreciate some advice on what depth container I need (and diameter, but I expect that's up to me :))

I plan to use some John Innes compost that I have here spare - as its quite sandy and fine.

We have successfully grown early nantes and parmex (round carrots) in large pots, but netted them against carrot fly  :Pwith old net curtains as the pots were only about 12 ins tall

i would assume from this that parsnips would work ok too then seeing as they are of a similar nature?

Parsnips are very deep rooted so would not recommend.

As there are many different varities it could be that there will be one suitable for containers but can't help with that one.

I have carrot growing everywhere at the mo, on my lottie, at home in containers and in the g/h. I just love freshly pulled carrot.

Have alook here..

All the info I could want and more ... many thanks. I've not just have to think whether the Avocado cast-iron (I kid you not!) bath that the previous owners installed, and we have evicted, could be put in the veg. patch - seems the ideal size for a season's crop.

I inherited some really deep containers so am lucky about being able to grow parsnips in containers too.

If you keep your eyes open, use freecycle and ask around you may well get enough tall tubs to have a go with parsnips as well as carrots.

I grew carrots succcesfully in pots (mayo tubs that are used in chip shops) last year.  They have a depth of about 30cm.

Growing four different varieties this year to see which works best.  I'll be sure to report back what which type does.

I have grown mine in some wooden tubing off an old organ for the past couple of years with mixed results. They are about 18" long and the bottom six inches are buried in the ground. They are then filled with a mixture of compost soil and grit. Its my understanding that they like good drainage so I add a fair amount of grit.

What I thought I would try this year was burying 8" of 1/2" pipe down in the soil so as I could water down the pipe and direct water to the bottom of the tube to encourage long roots. When I get a minute I will have a go and take a picture.
