Carrots in containers?
« on: April 07, 2008, 08:54 »
On the big dig over the w/e they were growing some impressive carrots in containers.
I have sown some carrot seed in the veg patch but as it is my first year the soil needs some improving!(lots of stones). So sowing in containers this year seems like a good idea.
They were using blue barrels, does any one know where to get these or something similar? Although maybe they don't have to be that deep as it will be expensive to fill them with compost. Does any one have any ideas for a good container to grow carrots in? (chantenay, rainbow and purple dragon).

Thanks

i grew some very successful crops last year in the deep blue or black mushroom containers that you can get from most greengrocers the ones that are about 10" deep and about a foot long by about 8-10" wide or the polystyrene fish boxes are just as good remember to put some drain holes in the bottom though
Everyone should grow their own veg and know where their food is coming from even if it is only a one pot on a patio or balcony Grow Something!!

you will need deeper containers for the rainbow and purple dragon something like the cheep patio containers from poundstretchers etc would be fine for them

I grow mine in an old bath which I fill with riddled soil.

So much to do, but so little time.

Mine are in florists' buckets (holes drilled in bottom), ideal for growing lots of things and only 10p each  :)

I have a plastic dustbin from poundstretcher that's being used for carrots this year,  (as well as some on the plot) Hopefully I'll get a crop one way or the other

Can I ask what the minimum height of the containers should be?  I have some large pots but I am unsure as to whether they will be big enough.

Thank you
Teen

To avoid Carrot root fly damage the container needs to be 33 inches high.  (if i'm quoting correctly!)
1 x hubby
2 x daughters
3 x chickens
1 x bunny
6 x african snails  . . . . . and counting.

Wow pretty big then.  My containers are nowhere near that.  I shall have to look out for something bigger.

RHS recommend 24" - that's what I do.

http://www.rhs.org.uk/Advice/profiles0500/carrot.asp

I know you can't get pots 24" high, but you could always put a barrier around them or some fleece/enviromesh over them.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?
