Hi all - with the great weather this week and a lull in work I decided to get planting/sowing. I've sown carrots, parsnips, lettuce, brocolli and mangetout, planted my onion sets and garlic cloves and broad bean plugs.

I've also planted raspberry canes, and about to plant a young rhubard plant and two young blueberry bushes.

I was also planning on sowing some corgettes directly into the place they're to grow.

Question is, which of these need protection against the coming frost this weekend? Would cloches be the best bet or fleeces?

Ta for any advice - it'll all go in my diary for next year so I'll know what to do then!

far too early for courgettes (in my opinion), if planting direct outside i'd wait til may at least. i'll be starting mine off mid april in doors. about the only thing you need to really worry about is the lettuce, and i think i would go for a cloche but either should do the job.

I know i'm in the south but i should think you'll be ok with what you've put in as long as it doesn't turn really cold again.

But don't sow the courgette until all the frosts are finished if you're sowing them outside,
any frost will kill them. That's why most people start them ona window ledge

i agree with mum: you can sow directly in june, but before that, in pots on the windowsill.
as for the stuff you've got outside - cloches, or you could make a cloche with chicken wire and sheet plastic
or put them under a cold frame.
or fleece.

but definitely protect the blueberry and the stuff in the first paragraph.
shouldn't need to protect the raspberry or rhubarb.

Thanks for that everyone I've just reread my corgette packet and it does indeed say April/May outdoors so I'll start them indoors - only my second year at this and last year was all luck and flaw to be brutally honest!
