What veg do you protect?
« on: September 24, 2011, 13:42 »
I'm new to allotment growing and would just like to know what veg/ fruit do fellow allotmenteers, net/enviromesh to protect their produce. Also do they keep it on throughout the growing season or take it off at some stage? thanks

I have been lucky with carrot root fly, I always pull my carrotts in the evening and then rub the plants over with the juice from an Onion leaf to disguise the smell.  The most important things to cover I find, are the brassicas from the pesky cabbage white butterflys.

carrots covered with enviromesh, all the time.

Anything in the brassica family covered with netting, holes smaller than 7mm to protect from butterflies, and with mesh with larger holes in the winter to stop pigeons eating them.

and from next year - leeks will be covered with enviromesh, cos they got caught with leek moth this year :(

At the start of the year when the sparrers are hungry I have to hanf fleece/net curtains over the tops of peas and beans to stop them being pecked to destruction!

Bird netting over strawberries and raspberries when the fruit is swelling.

I think that's enough  :(

Almost exactly word for word wot Mum says, apart from protection against leek moth which doesn't seem to have reached here yet. Oh, and birds seem to ignore my autumn raspberries but used to nick nearly all the summer ones until I got rid of them (the raspberries, silly!)  :)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

I'd like to any type of currant, and on my plot, gooseberries too

and seedlings, which are eaten by pigeons as soon as they emerge.

and plant pak choi under enviromesh alongside those carrots,as then there are no flea beetles' holes in the leaves  :D

Do you always have to net blackcurrants KC?

Carrots against fly - having skipped 6 wheelbarrow loads in my first year on this site, I would never risk anything other than a physical barrier, Enviromesh in this case.

All brassicas against pigeons and cabbage whites, (debris netting).

All currants against pigeons mostly, but others have a go. (Any old netting).

Peas as above.

Strawberries, against blackbirds - any old wide-ish netting

Next year - leeks under Eviromesh against Leek Moth.

In fact I may build a big cage around the plots - it'd be easier!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

But if somebody could tell me how to keep the mice off my carrots, parsnips and strawberries, I'd be eternally grateful :)
