Where do you buy your bamboo canes ?
« on: February 20, 2009, 12:14 »
Do you get them at a local garden centre, somewhere like wilkinsons or online or mail order ?

I saw some in Moreton Park and I was shocked when they were £2.99 for 10 and I am just thinking of all the runner and broad beans I want to grow and there is the peppers, tomatoes, chilli, aubegines, and cucumbers and I need to net the caulis and cabbages somehow.

Please say their is a cheaper way/supplier ?

Thanks

We got our last lot from a local horticultural place. I wanted 100, so the man said to Brian, they are in bundles of 150, can you separate them?  And as Brian started to undo the bundle, the man said oh s*d it, take the whole bundle for £20  so that worked out about 13p each for 6ft ones I think, or could have been longer.

They can be expensive now though, but when you think they must come from the other side of the world and some poor soul has to cut the things.  But I suppose they are done by a machine!

The cheapest I've got them from was a shop called B & M Bargains, (not sure if you have one near you). £1.50 for 15 I think they were. They also had the cone shaped wire frames too, about 4ft tall for only £2.99.

I previously paid a fiver for 20 at a garden centre!

Try cutting some long straight stems off hazel or willow trees as an alternative, much more environmentally friendly, if any are to hand, they will grow back.

Online at LBS Garden Warehouse:-

100 3 foot £6.26
100 4 foot £7.77
25 5 foot £3.91
25 6 foot £4.46
25 7 foot £5.70
25 8 foot £6.41
25 10 foot £11.24

There are also thicker ones that are a bit more expensive. Whilst there are delivery costs on top, it isn't much (about £5 from memory) and there are always other things that I buy from them anyway.  The delivery is quite quick about 2/3 days.  No I don't work for them but I do find them good value and they phone you if there is an item not in stock and send it later with your agreement.  A happy customer.  :)

Funny you should mention that. Just the other day it dawned on me that I could grow some willows on my lottie, at the bottom on the banks of the bourne. There is already a hazel just the other side, with a branch coming over onto my plot and just begging to be pinned to the ground (layering). I had been thinking of the willows for basketry, but two year poles should make good bean poles.
Striclty speaking we're not supposed to grow trees, but then again they won't actually be on the plot!
I demand the right to buy seed of varieties that are not "distinct, uniform and stable".

You can usually get a reasonable bundle from poundland, or from QD; in fact any of the cheapo shops - we have a Thingummygigs in Ipswich which often has cheap gardening stuff.  I can't bear to buy the canes from garden centres!
