Should I be seeing my garlic yet?
« on: January 11, 2009, 12:58 »
I planted my garlic (Solent Wight, 39 cloves) in the second week of October, and cannot see signs of any of them coming through yet. My onions went in the following week (60 sets) and are at varying stages from just poking through the soil (I planted them a little deeper than normal so as to not lose too many to the birds!) to a couple of inches high.

Should my garlic be showing yet or do I just need to be more patient?
Sal

Organic...so far!

I planted my garlic at a similar time, about half of it is poking out an inch, a quarter I can just see and the rest no sign of yet.

I planted mine in late November and they are all about 10 - 15 cm high.  Maybe the Jersey weather is a bit warmer though than in the UK.  Or at least it was until a couple of weeks ago but since then we have had loads of frost and the garlic has stopped growing.  Hopefully it will start again now that the cold is going.

Last season I planted mine in Oct 07 and they were a few inches tall by New Years Day.
This season I planted the garlic October 08 and they are only just starting to poke through but only by 1 or 2 Cm's
99% Organic and 1% Slug Pellets.

Allotment holder since 27th May 2007.

PS  I forgot to mention that my onions which were planted at the same time as my garlic (see above) have only a few showing though and the tallest is only about 3cm high, so it is the other way around from you!

I planted some garlic late on in october and i'm roughly the same in latitude and mine are 3-4inches high! I'm in a warm spot however with full sun. What has the weather been like for you in oct & nov?

We've had a few hard frosts inbetween damp days recently but Oct and Nov was bright and just a bit rainy plus my garlics situated about 4 feet up alongside my conservatory wall, so that might shield it a bit.  Just a bit worried that its growing too quick...don't know exact weather conditions but we have had about 5 hard frost mornings (and days) this last fortnight.

Waits to see what Sal's weathers been like

We put Solent Wight in at about the same time as you Sal and it's only just started to show some growth.Iv' been told this is quiet normal so I'm not worried yet.

Weather here has been anywhere from cold to freezing since end of October, dry though, we've just had our first couple of rain showers in weeks. Our allotment site is on a hillside facing North-North East - goodness knows who decided that would be a good place for it and why?!   The ground up there hasn't frozen though, which I'd have thought it would have because the ground in the garden has been rock solid for weeks.
