Elephant garlic or ordinary garlic
« on: October 13, 2022, 14:10 »
Most of my elephant garlic wasn't great this year. Also I have mixed some with ordinary garlic and I'm not sure which is Which. See photo I think it is elephant garlic in the picture?
PS ignore the broad bean! Can't get rid without starting again!

Elephant garlic is often noticeably bigger than regular garlic, and has small bulbils around the basal plate as well as the main cloves, whereas normal garlic doesn't.

It's hard to tell if the picture is of EG or ordinary garlic but it looks to me as though it might be EG because of the shape of the cloves (I have found they are squarer looking than regular garlic).

The only fool-proof way to tell is to taste one.
Elephant garlic is much milder than ordinary garlic, and IMO  tastes more like leek with a touch of garlic seasoning  :D
Whereas there's no confusing what a proper garlic clove tastes like

Looks like normal garlic that’s been left in ground to long you just pulled it up? Only my opinion could be wrong

I always think elephant garlic is not dissimilar to ordinary garlic in taste untill cooked. I will do a further not very pleasant taste test.
