Planting pea seedlings out on weekend
« on: February 26, 2007, 22:23 »
I have had them in my greenhouse for a couple of days now and I cannot believe how quickly the soil keeps drying out on them, it is 11c in the cold g/house this evening and was 22c on the weekend during the day!

So I have decided to plant them out on Saturday as on the pack it said to plant them straight out now, if they fail then I have plenty of time to sow some more!

Should be OK if they're an early variety - I used Pilot but there's others. Protect them from the wind though - a load of mine were banjaxed when the netting blew and ripped them out of the soil. Live and learn...
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

Woh! Woh!

You must harden them off before planting them out. They will be far too soft and tender to take life outside just like that. Put them outside in a sheltered spot during the day and bring them in again for the night. Do this for at least a week to 10 days before leaving them out all night for a bit longer.

It's a pain but plants used to 20c in seclusion cannot be stuffed out in the cold and wind just like that. If they don't die they will sit and sulk for a month and you will be late instead of early.

Will pop them outside today for a bit, they have been in a cold green house for a few days now also.

Pop some of your climate in the mail please - we have a dusting of snow lying this morning.

Sorry - forgot that "hardening off" doesn't mean "put out in hurricane" - I've learnt that too. And me with a cold frame and all.
