Anyone planting their spuds this weekend?
« on: March 16, 2014, 08:02 »
The weather looks great for today and the temperatures are looking fairly decent next week, with no frost forecast.

I'm planning on getting my earlies in today and the rest in the week when I have more time.

Anyone else taking the plunge?

I would like to but no one else on our allotment site has planted theirs I don't think any way plus we are away for a week from next weekend and if it is dry they won't get watered. So not sure yet what to do.  :)

No.

Another couple of weeks. Frost in the next few weeks is not the problem. Frost once the spuds have come up is. Neither I, nor the weather forecasts can see that far ahead.  We can have frosts in June, certainly there's a bigger risk in May.

I like to give my spuds a fighting chance!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

We are a long way off spuds needing watering, unless they're in containers!

Monday is St Patrick's Day which is traditional potato planting day. A bit early to plant the whole crop but probably worth planting a few earlies that it will not be a great task to cover against frost in May.

There is of course an old saying to tell us the weather " As many frosts in May as fogs in March".

My earlies and seconds went in a couple of days ago. but then I can smell the sea air from my allotment.

There comes a point when planting later into April, runs the risk of blight arriving before the potatoes have bulked up enough, and then there is nothing one can do, certainly in a non chemical sense.
For the very odd late frost, just make sure one has enough soil for a further earthing up. I would plant a couple of weeks later if I were up North.

Mine went in yesterday but being that much further south and in a protected plot frost is not such a worry. I am surrounded by trees around my plot which at times I curse (attracted more birds and squirrels so my plants get attacked more than others). However, it does mean I rarely get frosts once the leaves start to appear on the trees - much more sheltered. I have put them in deep and not even earthed them up yet so will have plenty of soil to do this once they start to poke their heads up

Personally I think the soil is too cold. Simple test to put your elbow in a hole. I was clearing some ground and found a potato from last year. It didn't have a growth on it.
I already have a dozen pots in full foliage, and have started more earlies in small pots. I will transplant them into bigger pots in due course.
Don't be fooled just because we didn't get any frost in Winter. My frost free nights are still 6 weeks away.
