Onion Mould
« on: February 22, 2007, 14:21 »
Oh deary deary me, I planted my onions into cells to start them off in the greenhouse. I was so happy, all the lovely green shoots - signs of life - very uplifting. I went to visit them again today and noticed mould appearingaround them. Ohhh nooooooooooo - is this the end! They are Brunswicker (red) onions. I have them in a homemade heated propagator - with soil cables and sand.   My greenhouse is insulated with bubble wrap and also has a heater but has some ventilation. They are next to my other onions - should I get rid of them or is there hope? :(
It's all in the balance - black and white and all the colours in the spectrum.

Agree with Munty. Sounds like surface fungus from a bit too much water and heat. A thin layer of sand on the planter surface helps stop it but in the meantime, get them out of the heat - onions don't really fancy it after they've germinated.

Thanks MJ.  Just got back from walking the dogs - should I dry out first and get wet again or use my usual theory - once you get wet you can't get wetter.  Is it raining in Lowestoft too? I'm in Norfolk. Decisions, decisions
