What I have learnt so far in my second year
« on: July 25, 2008, 12:32 »
I always learn something on here for instance:

Dropping leeks in a 6" hole for blanching when planting out.  Last year just planted as you normally would.  Was still ok, just a lot of green.

Cape Gooseberries grow again next year, they are perinneal (spelling).

Just learnt sweet peppers grow again next year, unfortunately threw last years before learnt that.  I had my suspicions though.

There is a winter white lisbon spring onion.

And finally I must like to be different as most people seem to love Kohl Rabbi but I think it tastes revolting and stinks

I must say though that my sweet peppers looked dead.  But then again so did my Regal Geraniums (might be Pelargoniums as T&M call them all Geraniums) and that burst into life.

Hi
One thing I have learnt is not to be so impatient starting stuff off in the spring - especially as it seemed so cold and wet for such a long time.  I was in such a hurry to get all the new beds that I had dug filled that it took a while to realise that there is no rush.
Manyana is it what the Spanish say;  I guess like many with a new plot I was over enthusiastic to get stuff in.
Everyday is the dawn of a new error...

Things Ive discovered this year.

Theres is absolutely no point in trying to grow determinate tomatoes in growbags. They're far too close together and watering / feeding is practically impossible.

No matter how well you weight down / peg down or tied down a plastic mini greenhouse it WILL blow over.

If the packet says "self supporting when planted in blocks" its lying.

Anything with dwarf in the description really means slugs and snails will eat it quicker.

This is what we try to stress to newcomers every year. But nobody listens.

Why should they? - I never used to!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I only started my (tiny) plot this year in my back garden. The things I have learnt are:

- Only plant things you will actually eat. Really. Everyone advises it - I ignored it. I ended up with half a plot of radishes which I don't like and I let run to seed. Oh well, it's good compost I suppose :)

- Don't put cactii in a growhouse in a south facing garden. I never knew that cactii could get sunburn

What I have learnt is I like allotment vegitable gardening rather than
home flower gardening, you dont have to keep doing the same job over and over (apart from weeding)Like pruning dead heading clearing up dead stalks mowing the lawn. though the end result is quite pleasing

Me too! I love my garden, but would have it all as veg apart from my pond and a patio area if I could.  Thank gawd for getting the lotty :-)

Ive also learnt to take things easy and not do too much, and Ive learnt that I have NO patience whatsoever. Its killing me waiting for stuff to be ready to harvest. Ive also learnt Im a lazy so and so where planning is involved and I need to discipline myself this year.

Ive also learnt that veg growers and chook keepers are lovely lovely people :-)

Lardman that is so so true.  I gave up with mine and now use the parts thus:
The green wire shelves are now tables holding pots.  As I have said many times before, I need to have pots etc. higher than the dog can wee, otherwise no one will eat the veg.

The plastic housing will help overwinter the flowers in pots.  As will the fleece overcoat the house had.

The top hoop frame of the house helps as a cloche.

I've put two large slate rocks on the bottom shelf of my plastic greenhouse. It's weighed down and even in the biggest storms we've had over the year it hasn't blown over. The bonus is being slate i can still put pots, trays or tools on it. On the downside, snails like it.

I've found out...

> It is possible to get a bumper crop of tomatoes without the greenhouse. I still don't believe how many i have in growbags (5 plants = lots and lots).

> Getting chickens and letting them freerange in your veg garden is tantamount to being a masochist.

> Chicken poo is brilliant

> Investing in proper fetiliser and sticking to a fertilising regimen is crucial.

> Never grow any of the following again: Leeks, Spring Onion, Onion.

Things I have learned 'so far' this year are:

Plans are wonderful, but be prepared to change them, REGULARLY!

Don't plant a whole bed of lettuces, successional sowing is the future!

Must remember to give myself a lot more space around my Tatties for earthing up....

Triple the amount of Onions i grew.. I never knew we got through so many. :?

Outdoor Tomatoes deffinately prefer a bit of shade!

Rasberries have to go (covered in bind weed)

Parsnips are a lot bigger than I thought

Ohhh.. and most important thing.............................

DO NOT GROW MORE THAN ONE COURGETTE!!!!!!!!!
Life begins... On the kitchen windowsill.
