Far away photos sanuka, search  google images or site for grubs vineweevil(sp) or chaufer (sp) grubs are an enemy, if in doubt, leave alone, more friends then foes about.

The top picture:

I had them, think they were cutworms. They attacked and toppled one of my broccoli plants before read about them in a book.
They attack one plant cutting it off at the base before burying themselves in the soil for the day. The next night they move to another plant and do the same.
You can find them either at night or by day. Start digging around in the top two inches of soil in concentric circles from the base of the plant.

Find em and squish!!!!!

The bottom one, no idea!!!

Top pic looks more like a Jap. beetle grub. They love lawns and will kill lawn roots.

Whippetmaster - for cutworms, simply place a bit of thin branch in the ground snug against the plant stem at planting time. To do its nasty work, cutworms must be able to curl completley around the stem and touch their other end. If they can't touch, they can't cut. The bit of narrow branch/stick/whatever makes the stem too large for them to wrap around. I've done this for years and never lost a plant to them.

Glad to help. Sometimes solutions are so simple, people find it hard to believe, but it really does work. I always do it as a preventative measure.

The words 'red bug' conjure up thoughts of the lily beetle, if it's bright red and shiny.

May be completely wrong in this instance tho'
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
