Hi folks,

What kind of butterfly is this:

Does the following picture show a grub or a worm? Is it friend or foe?

Markings are very much like some of the Fritillary family so it might be one of them.  I am not an expert.

It appears to be a Comma 'Polygonia c-album' - one of the Fritillary family, as W-G suggested.

No guesses - sorry but picture isn't particularly good.  Perhaps you could search Google images to see if you find anything close.  Try caterpillar, worm, etc

Well it's segmentated and no obvious mouth parts, looks like a worm, so I'll go for worm. Where did you find it ? in the compost heap ?

OK here are the other photos, thanks for your efforts  8)
If you look at them real fast you'll get the illusion of movement.

No idea    still looks like a worm, but one that's been chopped with a spade. notice back end is blunt with a bit sticking out at the back ? just like  a chopped worm

If they were on Southend beach, I would say lugworm, but they still look like leeches to me, which you can find in wet soil.

Yeah, I'd say leech. It moved like a leech (suckers at either end). I'd say its skin was too dull and dry to be an earthworm.

Are leeches good or bad?
