HI, has anyone grown Rhubarb from seed before.I saved some seed from one of my neighbours plants last year and sowed them about 4 weeks ago.My question is ,what do the seedlings look like when they first germinate.I think mine have germinated ,though they look like tiny grass storks,they only appeared today.I am wondering whether the compost was contaminated.

Yes I have grown rhubarb from seed before.  Mine took ages to germinate, several weeks from memory.  The leaves are very small versions of the normal rhubarb leaf but perhaps more rounded, i.e. not like grass.  Suggest you just keep a close eye on the row, hopefully you have it marked out and take out anything you are sure is a weed, if not leave it!

I sowed them in a seed tray in an un-heated greenhouse.

I did it once but it went straight to seed.

The seedlings look a bit like cress then small dock leaves.

Mine was growing really well then a gigantic flower spike emerged.

It's pointless really unless you have some really rare one,even then it's better to plant a bit of root.

I have grown rhubarb from seed but i put them in pots in the greenhouse first. I cannot remember how long they took to germinate or how they looked as babies. We will be able to pull stems this year as you cannot for the first year.
