Sprouts - are they really worth it?
« on: March 14, 2008, 09:11 »
Everyone seems to grow sprouts and I find it amazing! A quick walk round any of the three allotments near my house shows bed after bed of sprout stalks.

I don't mind sprouts and I'd gladly eat them if they were put in front of me but are they really worth all that space and effort?? I can think of a hundred other things I'd rather be using that space for.
Good beer, good BBQ and good friends.

Definitely. I used to loathe sprouts until I had home grown, cooked properly.

They freeze reasonably well and there's a lot of goodness packed into those little balls.  They're not that much trouble either

     I cant believe you are asking this question, we have *arting competions at home, what boring lives we would lead if it was not for the humble sprout.

I grew them for the first time this year and yes, like purple sprouting they take up lots of space but they give you green veg whenthere is little about and definatly taste good.I have to say that I did grow things inbetween the rows to make the most of space but these were out before the sprouts put on their real growth.Purple sprouting just cropping now, yum.

I didn't bother this year as last year's crop got squashed by a flying greenhouse. The competitions that Aidy refers to are tempting however.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

Definately...sprouts are great for winter veg, its nice to still have something green on the plot when not much else is going on. They are not much work, just keep the darn birds off  :x

The secret, well no secret really, the ground needs to be rock hard, I am just preparing mine now for this year, its been mucked and limed and now all i do for the next few months is walk up and down on it so its so hard you can play cricket on it.

mmm, perhaps not as bad as brocolli?  Have to admit to using a netted cage of sorts and just not take any chances - like you say RW, if you don't notice the little blighters, they quickly devour the lot  (previous experience of ... brocolli "stalks"!)

I managed to successfully grow sprouts for the first time last year. It was great picking fresh sprouts on Christmas Day. The ground does need to be very firm, and they do need netting from the good old cabbage white. I had 5 plants it total feeding 5 mouths once a week from mid Oct until early Jan. Well worth it IMO.
