« on: February 29, 2008, 08:59 »
Okay, another dumb question from the newbie!! ....when should I be fertilising? from seedlings? when I re-pot? or when I put in bed?
which is best for the veg as know i'm gonna get swamped with different varieties when I go to buy! so appreciate a guide on what to look out for.

Big question.

Seedlings don't need anything.

Further on, hugely varies by the veg and your soil. Look at the main page for types of feed.

Hi Courgette,

I'm a newbie so still experimenting. Got my first allotment in January.

I bought a 10kg tub of Fish, Blood and Bone organic fertiliser from my local garden center. I'm following the instructions in the gardening book and spreading it to my plots as a base dressing about 1-month before I sow.

I apply the rates given in my book, which is roughly 140g per sq. m. I halve this on the plots on which I've dug in compost. I try and scatter it evenly over the plot and then gently rake the top inch or so.

So far I've just put Garlic and Shallots in, so spread some on that pot a couple of weeks ago. I'll start putting some on other plots over the next few weeks, ready for my March and April sowings. I'll spread some on the Brassicas last, probably in May, because they won't be moved from the seed bed until summer, and I recently Limed.

My understanding is that, as it is an organic fertiliser it will be fairly slow release.

Also be interested to know other peoples comments.

Cheers,

Mark.

I think it's important to get a good book out the library, read through them and buy the one you like best. I got Joy Larkom veg handbook which I use all the time for reference

Seed catalogues are a good reference too and help you decide on varieties.
