Cabbage whites & brassicas!!!
« on: July 06, 2019, 10:18 »
Good morning all!  My brassicas are growing well (under 4mm netting!) however some of the leaves from my brussels sprouts and cabbages are touching the netting now.  Is it OK to remove these few leaves without detriment to the growth of the plant or not?  If not I will just have to do a daily egg check.  Grateful for any advice.  Happy weekend.

Good morning freefolk,
I may be wrong but... I think those dambed butterflies like to plant their eggs on the undersurface of the leaves, so you could ensure that no undersides show.  Touch a large plank of wood, I have seen very few cabbage whites around my brassicas this year.

Cheers,  Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

I saw 5 flying around my sprouts this morning.  Depressingly I've also found them inside my enviromesh covered cabbages – over than encase my brassicas in concrete I’m not sure what else to do….

Good evening andyww2013,
have you seen the programme about building the sarcophagus over Chenobil?  That may keep the beggers out!  (But only for a short while).

Cheers,   Tony.

I haven't seen a single cabbage white yet! Half of me is celebrating my luck but the other half is worried about butterfly populations

Mine are under debris netting, but last year I realised that the little blighters were managing to squeeze through the "eyelet" holes in it, so I spent a happy couple of hours with a crochet hook and black nylon wool blanket stitching a 40' length of the netting's eyelets closed.   Worth the effort because now they can't get in at all, even if some of my plot neighbours thought I was having a "moment"!
