Advance advisory of poor gardening weather
« on: April 27, 2014, 00:31 »
Just been on the UKweatherworld forum looking at the forecast model chat thread and there is talk of some truly awful weather charts for early May (specifically 4th-10th May), with sub-zero minimum temps and single figure daytime maximums as a ridge forms to the west of the UK putting the UK in a persistent northerly wind. It seems to be one model outlook and is a long way off, so confidence is very low, but it is worth bearing in mind if anyone is thinking of putting out anything tender; would be a good idea to wait until near the bank holiday weekend and keep an eye on the forecasts.

I sure hope so - I will be on holiday that week  :D

British holiday - as usual, I'll pack winter woolies and hope for summer, so I don't have to wear them

On our local forecast this morning, the BBC weather person warned of a cold period at (from?) the end of the week but wasn't specific about the detail.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

They are rarely specific nowadays. Since the Fish/hurricane episode

dare i say we've had warnings of a cold snap every month this year but with nothing coming of it.

personally i don't think anyone can reliably predict the weather any further than a week away.

all my opinion of coarse and i'm sure many will disagree, but i won't be worrying just yet.

A cold snap at this time of year is nothing to worry about anyway IMO.
Unless of course, eager/impatient fingers have left you with a house full of plants that need to go out, but can't!

Or the frost destroying the potato foliage.
Or having just sown tomato seeds indoors, not wanting the indoor temperature to drop too low for germination.
Or wanting to start the courgettes soon before there is insufficient growing season left to produce a crop, but need temps of 20+C indoors first.
Or because I want my seedlings to hurry up and grow enough so I can put them out on the plot and have it look like I am actually attempting to cultivate something.
Or perhaps because I'm a traditionalist at heart and think that winter temperatures belong in the winter, not late spring.

I don't pay any attention to weather forecasts, they're invariably completely wrong even forecasting for the day or day after!

Today was supposed to be raining all day...other that a few spots here and there, it was dry. Yesterday was supposed to be heavy rain at 4.00 but we had blazing sunshine instead.

I used to pay attention - I'd not go to the lottie because it was due to rain...and it was pretty much always the case that it was dry instead. Of course those days when the forecast predicted sunshine, it would pee it down and I'd have to shelter in the shed for hours on end.  ::)

Now I just go up and get on with it. If it rains, I'll either wait it out or come home. If it's sunny, that's a bonus!
