Courgette and tomato problems
« on: August 07, 2013, 08:19 »
I noticed today that some of my tomatoes are all wrinkled (they're still green). What could be wrong? I've definitely watered them regularly, and other plants that have been watered as much and are in the same type of pot and soil don't show any problem. Can they be salvaged, or I might as well cut them off the plant to give a better chance to the rest?
Also, my sister told me that her courgette plants are dying, and she says they are covered in what looks like thin cobwebs, and possibly some tiny animals running over them (too small to see what they're like). Any idea what that could be?

No idea what's wrong with the tomato - can you post a photo?

the webs are uually red spider mites, which are difficult to control.

Agree with mum about the red spider mite.

Are the tomatoes in a greenhouse, and are the affected ones in a hotter place/getting more sun than the others?

This isn't a problem I've come across, and looks more like what you'd expect to find if you'd picked a green tomato and left it in the fridge for a few weeks (i.e. dehydrated.)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

The tomatoes are outdoors, and they are all in the same place, next to each other.
I can't quite work out if the mosaic virus could be the culprit; the fruits are not marked, just wizened - exactly as if they had been left too long in the fridge.

I'd be interested in hearing about the wrinkled tomatoes. Last year another family member had a lot of tomatoes that wrinkled up when green. We never worked out what it was.

Can't find much out there on the WWW, just a very similar question from someone on the RHS forum (but not a single answer!) and THIS which isn't much more helpful, especially as the blogger is sure that insufficient watering was the cause.

I wonder if your affected tomato plants have somehow got a root problem causing poor water and nutrient uptake (you may never know unless someone has the sure-fire answer on here.)
