When I accidentally nearly drowned my worms when the tap got blocked I found a lot had got into half egg shells where I hadn`t bothered to crush them.I now put them in on purpose as little wormy life boats.I also add bran every now and then.If yours isn`t a big bin it maybe worth turning it out and restarting it,if it is a big bin then wait until it is warmer as decomposing worms and overly wet rotting food/worm compost is vile.

My worms are unhappy too.

Having read up about worm death/exodus, I took the advice of my book and started adding only dry matter (mainly shredded paper and torn-up cardboard), mixing it in and not adding anything else for a couple of weeks. I've also added lime pellets. But the worms are nowhere to be seen in the top layer, and seem to be lurking on the top of the bottom layer.

Shall I just carry on adding food as before now, or think about scrapping the top layer and staring again, or even ordering more worms?

 I've had to stop throwing in snails/worms etc for my hens because I was feeling so bad about it -- all those little lives..

I'm thinking of making a wormery just for the sake of the chickens :D (I am totally off soya for protein, and want to make sure they still get enough.)
I demand the right to buy seed of varieties that are not "distinct, uniform and stable".
