what is the cause of onions getting thick necks?

Planted in last years tayty bed. Didn't add anything other than a bit of growmore a couple of weeks before planting. I did give it a good digging over. A seasoned onionist said the ground needed to be firmed right down for onions. I left it quite airy. Could that be it?

The weather can play a big part as well as the size of the set's you plant. Smaller set's are best.

What counts as a 'thick' neck and is it a problem if they have thick necks?

thick necks will not store, so either use first or slice and open freeze before putting into bags.
