Cloudy Summer....
« on: June 19, 2013, 12:56 »
If we have a cloudy summer, do squashes, and courgettes etc.. still produce a decent crop?

At the end of May when we had summer, everything was growing a couple of inches a day..... now nothing has moved in about 2 weeks....

When there is no photosynthesis do things just lag?
When weeding, the best way to know if its a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull it.

If it comes out easy, it was a valuable plant !

Light rays come through clouds regardless, so don't worry. You might not get as big a yield as in a sunny year, but you will get cropping. As for them stalling now, it's more likely the cooler weather since all squashes prefer hot weather.

We are in the middle of a warm spell and it is amazing how the plants have come on in just a couple of days - but I do wonder how much stress this stop and start growth pattern put the plants under.

Although it is warm in the day we are still getting some chilly weather at night. That said it will not go below 17 degree's tonight. A lot of squashe's and bean's have yellow leave's on my site.

Yellowing leaves could indicate several things: that the weather is still too cool for squashes which love heat, that the soil is a bit too dry (stick your finger in the ground and if it's damp, it's fine; if dry, water. they need 2" per week), or you need a bit more nitrogen in the soil so the cold roots can access it better.

What would you normally expect from 4 plants Madame?

Not sure exactly it was my 1st year but I was told 4 would be plenty.

In a good year with four plants you would be feeding your family and your neighbours as well. They are very prolific given the right conditions - unfortunately last year was not a good one. My plants all upped and died on me. So far this year they are doing better.  :)

I know many people on this board had no success with courgette in 2012, but because I had mine in a grow back because of the lack of room, I managed around 15 6 inch fruit off 1 plant   8)  They really seem to benefit from the increased warmth you don't get direct in the ground (unless your using a raised bed). I found that as long as they had plenty of feeding and water, they don't actually need that much direct sun and perform better than many of the tender crops in a cool summer   :)
