Thick-necked onions
« on: September 22, 2009, 17:03 »
I have usually grown onions from sets but this year I also tried growing from seed and both were a success with good sizes for cooking and very few tiddlers. However, I do seem to get a lot of onions with thick necks that I believe should be used up quickly as they don't store too well, and also they begin sprouting new leaves even though they have been hung upside down to dry and their roots cut off. What is causing this - is it too much / not enough of certain nutrients in the soil or is it me???
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

No, not just you. We all suffer from thick necks I should think  :) They are perfectly edible but it's true they need using up quickly as they won't store

If you have a lot of thick necked onions you can store some sliced in the freezer.
