sulking peas this year?
« on: May 26, 2013, 19:54 »
Is anyone else having problems with direct sown pea germination this year?

I sowed mine 4 weeks ago and only about 1 in 10 have grown of my favorite variety (Champion of England) and nothing at all from Misty and Delikat.  All have been under cloches, so its not birds and no sign of mice.  Just too cold I expect
Sometimes my plants grow despite, not because of, what I do to them.

Mine were slow to germinate. Now about an inch high but seem to have stopped.

I sowed some C Of E 11 days ago, they've been up a few days now and a really nice row.

As much as I like to sow early to avoid pea moth, the usual time of year may have been too cold and damp. It may have been an ill wind that I was late this year as the ground wasn't ready.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

My Kelvedon wonder hasn't come up in the greenhouse in guttering or directly sown, usually no problem.  Nor 2nd attempt and nothing in the trays when I checked (not mice, I have a system  8)), ditto the weird french named one I can't remember.  The asparagus pea made it though and is out doing ok.
I've chucked in a few handfulls of KW and some sugarsnaps & mangetouts direct in last week in a final show of disgust.  No sign yet.
I thought I was just me

Mine are certainly patchy.  Going to try another lot tomorrow.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Direct sown ones had poor very germination, so I sowed a lot in bits of gutters, and some more in divided in 3 mushroom boxes, so I could lift them out and slide into the rows.
A real faff but at least I've now got some growing and strongly as well, now!

In the garden I only got 10 sugarsnaps up out of a whole packet - direct sown later - I've just ordered some more  ::)

I never direct sow peas.  I sow them in those plastic strip thingy' s, then plant the whole strips.  They've only been in the garden for a few days so far, but they are all looking good so far!

I planted some chitted/soaked peas (Early Onward) mid April and none showed. The Mangetout treated exactly the same were fine.

Resowed the peas mid-May and still waiting for them to appear.

My Champion of England are now about two feet tall - delighted with them so far.  I put clear plastic over them after direct sowing to keep them warm until germination.

Only one row though, so I didn't have too many to worry about.

Mine have been in for 10 days and are 2 inches tall and looking quite sturdy. I put my birthday present cloches over them which might have helped?
