I would like to turn part of my garden into a vegetable growing patch. I have dug an area over but it still needs more work, at the moment and for the next few months I won't have the time. I was wondering if there was anything I could grow there to help stop the weeds getting established and, could be dug back in as a fertiliser until i'm available to work on the area. I think I saw on a popuar tv gardening programme that mustard could be used but I don't know what sort.
Has anyone got any advice.

You can plant any mustard seed - even from spice shops.  It will need dug in after only 6 or 7 weeks.

Wait until April though - or even May if you are in the same North-East as me.

Hi and welcome, might be a bit late to get the green manure in now - but there are others on this forum who know more about that than me.

If you've got the perennial weeds and roots out, the annuals will be killed off in the frost.

When these small weeds start germinating in spring, it's a good way to know that your ground is ready to plant/sow.

There.....something positive about weeds!
