New house, big veggie patch?
« on: June 18, 2012, 22:56 »
Hello everyone

I'm hopefully about to move house to what is essentially everything I've ever dreamed of for a new home.  However, my biggest worry is that it comes with about an acre of land, of which about a quarter is dedicated to the most wonderfully well kept vegetable patch & fruit plantation I've ever seen.

This has obviously been the current owners pride & joy and I feel compelled to continue his hard work but the problem is, I don't have anywhere near the knowledge, time or experience to maintain such an area.

I would like to ask this forum if, in your opinion, I stand any chance of finding someone locally who would enjoy working the plot for their own reward (or perhaps they would share a small percentage with me :)) and, if so, what would be the best way of searching for a potential candidate.

My apologies if I'm being utterly naive with this, but I'd appreciate any thoughts you may have?

Many Thanks

Well, you could try the Landshare project because it sounds like your situation is tailor made for it. If you find the find person you could get free veggies for you with somebody else doing all the work.

Oooooooooooohh if only! That's what we were after until we gave up trying to sell our house. An acre, certainly wouldn't be a problem to me! :D

However, Landshare is possibly a way of finding someone who wants your plot, though it hasn't been promoted on telly for ages and so is not as active as it could be.

http://www.landshare.net/

Hope you find someone keen and reliable, but if it's close to the house, you will need to ask if they will be bringing along hoards of kids or dogs who may free range around your garden.

An acre....how wonderful! :D

Many thanks to all of you for your kind response.  The information provided is extremely useful and the thought of finding someone that would take such pleasure in working the plot, and perhaps teaching me a few ropes along the way, is actually quite humbling.

I don't want to declare my location just yet, but I can say that (regrettably!) I'm nowhere near the locations mentioned so far.  I have visited the landshare website & that looks a really good starting point, but I might just throw it in here first (when I've actually moved) to see whether there's any takers?

Good point about the kids & dogs by the way, I hadn't considered that

Just a thought - how about going down to the local lottie and finding someone out of work or in-between jobs who may have the spare time and perhaps knowledge to help for a fistfull of dollars - if you know what I mean!  8)
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Come on, put us out of our misery, where are you located?   ;)
No matter how many plants I have in my garden, I can always find room for one more.
