Silkies fill the requirements (except large eggs, they're bantam size).  Easily tamed and easy going, very laid back chucks.  Our Daisy happy to sit on my 6 yr old daughters knee and watch tv.

It seems like now I've got a chook blog, I'm suddenly an expert!  A lady contacted me to ask why her 20 week old silkie hens aren't laying yet.  I've never had silkies, so can you tell me FatHen, when yours first started to lay please??????

I reckon she was about 8 - 9 months, I got her as POL :?:  in late march and finally laid egg in late August /early September.  Presently laying around 4-6 eggs/week.

My silkie chicks from this year didn't start laying till they were over 20 weeks old and are still laying tiny eggs a month later! They are also really hard to sex till they're older than other birds...you just have to wait for them to crow! The adults lay reasonable sized eggs, the yolks are as big as those in larger eggs. I agree that they are really friendly and great for children as they're so gentle and they're lovely and sofy and fluffy! They are also excellent broodies too...a bit too good sometimes!

I have one adult silkie hen that quacks like a duck as does one of her chicks...bizzare or what?!
