To clip or not to clip?
« on: April 04, 2012, 14:10 »
We have decided for safety's sake to net the drive over so we can leave the girls out unsupervised, but when they are in the garden, will they need their flight feathers clipped? We have a six foot fence around the garden and they would not be out there unsupervised, but until they get used to living here there is always the worry that they will be startled by something and fly over the fence.

Having a horse is so much easier...............

I don't think your hens would have too much of a problem scaling a 6 foot fence (they aren't heavy breeds) if they wanted to so it may be an idea to clip 1 wing each.

So far mine have never made an escape for freedom and their clippped feathers and after partial moults they have a full set of normal flight feathers. Perhaps clip them as they are new, this will give the, chance to get used to their environment.

Hope this helps.
Helen

We clipped ours but it doesn't stop them getting into the apple tree :( Or out of the electrified fence area :(

So we fenced and netted the run to be on the safe side.

It would be Ball's law, that I would be the idiot running down the road trying to catch any escapees.
