Sour crop?
« on: April 03, 2012, 13:43 »
Hi all,

I came back from holiday today and found one of my battery hens is very ill. I felt her crop and it is huge and squishy like? (She has lost a lot of weight and just stands hunched up falling asleep and then suddenly throwing her crop around) My neighbours said she hasn't been eating or drinking so I tried to get her to eat but wouldn't, so I tried to get her to drink and she drank quite a bit and then this brown liquid came out of her mouth!? I rang the vet but they said they couldn't have her in for another week or so as they're fully booked! Does anyone know what i can do to help her? I can't kill chickens myself but I don't want her to suffer!  :(

Thanks for all the help,

Just wondering whether it's too late to treat my hen as my neighbour who looked after my chooks said she had been like it for a week? I am so upset and wish I never went on holiday now :(

Thanks everyone!

I managed to squeeze most of the liquid out of her crop this morning however there is still a bit left that I can't seem to get out of her

We had a chicken with a sour crop last summer, we tilted her forward to make her sick, it was so smelly! and then shringe- fed her live yoghurt. We did this 3 times a day as the crop kept filling up again.  Did this process for about 4 days until the crop was no longer filling up and nothing came out when we tilted her.  She then started eating normally again, and made a full recovery.  Good luck!!
