To clip or not to clip?
« on: July 17, 2010, 11:40 »
Hello everyone,

When I eventually get my chickens, they will be in a very large run - so will not be free ranging...therefore, my question is...when I get the chickens, should I ask the poultry supplier to clip the wings or not?

Thanking you in advance for any help/suggestions you may come up with.
regards Patricia

Some chickens fly more than others even within the different breeds. I have 4 foot electric fencing but had one bird that would still fly over. It is really easy to clip (only one wing) a wing. I would get the breeder to show you so that you know how to do it if you decide you want to.
Also following a good m :)oult you will need to clip the new feathers.
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!

will the run have some sort of roof on it, if it does no point in clipping wings at all.

i personally dont clip at all, mine have a coop with run attached, and are allowed free range when im about in the garden, not lost one  yet :)

If they are to be kept in a covered run then there is really no need to clip there wings. If the run is not covered and the girls can fly out then i would clip the wings but only do one side and when they have a moult and the new feathers grow you will have to do it again.

Yes the run will be fully covered - so I guess its pointless in clipping!

Mine are totally free range, and their wings are unclipped - they're so happy here, they just don't want to leave! :tongue2:
