To chit or not to chit, that is the question!!
« on: March 14, 2009, 19:41 »
As a lone Brit in a sea of Yanks I do raise some eye brows over here at this time of year when I tell people I am going to start chitting spuds!.
Must be the accent, because frequently the word chitting ( which is unknown here) is confused in the American mind with a similar sounding word which could be confused with compost!

Anyhoo, does anyone not chit and if so what, if any difference has been noticed with plant development.

Chitting gives the spuddies a good head start but isnt vital at all. Our very own Ice doesnt chit and she doesnt have any problems.  Ive only just got my earlies (vivaldi and PFA) and mains (King Edwards) Ive put them on the window sill and if they chit fine, but if they dont they'll go in anyway.

I chit my mains this year for the first time as an experiment. They've had a week and still have only put out a few eyes.

I'd say whack them in if you have warm soil/south facing bed. If not... chit.

If a farmer was going to set a 40 acre field with potatoes I wonder where he would put all those spuds to chit. :D :D :D

I think the answer is if you feel better doing it then do it (chitting that is)

Tis true, I don't bother chitting anymore.  Some of my best spuds are volunteers from the year before.

As zazen999 says, chit your earlies if you really want to.
