Fartichokes - to chit or not to chit?
« on: February 15, 2007, 10:29 »
I've just dug up the last (I think) of my Jerusalem fartichokes, and was just wondering - the tubers for next years' plants, do I chit them like potatoes, or just plant them back in the soil as they are?

Don't  think so just bung em back in according to the guy who gave me mine.
About 6" deep he said.
He who asks is a fool for five minutes, but he who does not ask remains a fool forever.

The sooner they are back in the ground the better as they are quite hardy unlike potatoes. Personally, I would plant at 3-4 inches deep rather than 6 but this may vary according to soil type.

Most of mine are now rooting and shooting making it more and more difficult to find some for dinner.

It seems that as long as they have some soil over them they grow like mad ! where we are they are grown almost as much for the flowers as the tubers - easier than sunflowers but harder to ill off once they get started

Thanks for the advice, chaps - I planted them today so they were only out of the ground for about three hours!  I've planted six, and marked them, so it will be interesting to see how many I missed... I planted six last year, and that gave us more than enough tubers - a quantity I actually got right, unlike with the runner beans
